Colorado has been designated the Centennial State, the Colorful State, the Mountain State — but for gem enthusiasts and jewelry lovers, there's another designation that matters more than any of them.

Colorado is home to Aquamarine — the official State Gemstone, and one of the most coveted blue gemstones in the world.

But not all aquamarine is the same. And Colorado aquamarine jewelry — set with stones actually mined from the high peaks of this state — is in a category all its own. Here's what makes it so special, what to look for when buying, and why a hand-cut Colorado aquamarine piece may be one of the most meaningful things you ever add to your collection.

What Makes Colorado Aquamarine Different From the Rest

Aquamarine is a variety of beryl — the same mineral family as emerald — and its name comes from the Latin for "water of the sea." It ranges in color from pale, icy blue to rich, deep blue-green, and its clarity and brilliance make it one of the most elegant gemstones available for jewelry.

Colorado aquamarine is mined near the top of Mount Antero and Mount White — one of the highest

gem-producing localities in North America, sitting above 14,000 feet in elevation. The combination of altitude, geology, and extreme conditions creates crystals with a distinctive character: clear, often large, and marked by a cool, bright blue that collectors and gem cutters prize above specimens from many other regions. In 2024, we filed two Federal Mining Claims on Mount White and will be mining aquamarine crystals on our own claims.

Aquamarine was designated Colorado's official State Gemstone in 1971 — a recognition of both its natural abundance in the state and its cultural significance to the gem and mining community here. When you wear Colorado aquamarine jewelry, you're wearing something the state itself has claimed as its own.

The Properties That Make Aquamarine Ideal for Jewelry

Beyond its beauty, aquamarine has several practical characteristics that make it an outstanding choice for jewelry — particularly for pieces intended to be worn regularly and passed down over time.

Hardness and Durability

Aquamarine rates 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs Scale of hardness — hard enough for everyday wear in rings, pendants, bracelets, and earrings, and resistant to the minor abrasions that quickly dull softer stones. It's a gemstone you can actually wear, not just admire from a distance.

Clarity and Color

Unlike many commercial aquamarine stones that are heat-treated to enhance their blue, the finest Colorado specimens display natural color — ranging from soft pale blues to rich, saturated blue-greens. High-quality Colorado aquamarine is typically eye-clean, meaning inclusions are not visible to the naked eye, which makes it well-suited to faceted cuts that maximize its brilliance.

Versatility in Design

Aquamarine's cool blue palette pairs beautifully with yellow gold, white gold, and silver settings. It complements diamonds, white topaz, and white sapphire for added sparkle, and pairs naturally with other Colorado stones — including Rhodochrosite for a bold warm-cool contrast, or Amazonite for a rich, earthy combination that feels distinctly of this place.

What to Look for When Buying Colorado Aquamarine Jewelry

Not all aquamarine sold as "Colorado aquamarine" is actually sourced from Colorado — and not all Colorado aquamarine is created equal. Here's what matters when evaluating a piece:

Provenance — Know Where It Came From

Ask the jeweler or gem cutter directly: where was this stone mined? A maker who sources and cuts their own Colorado material will more than likely be able to tell you exactly where it came from. Vague answers like "it's a Colorado-style color" or "it's similar to Colorado aquamarine" are red flags.

Hand-Cut vs. Machine-Cut Stones

A hand-cut stone is faceted by a skilled gem cutter who studies the crystal and makes individual decisions about every angle — maximizing color, light return, and the natural beauty specific to that stone. Machine-cut stones are produced at volume with standardized templates. The difference in the finished piece is visible: hand-cut stones have a life and depth that mass-produced gems simply don't.

Colorado Blue Ice™ Aquamarine: A Standard Above the Rest

At Robert Michael Gems & Jewelry, we take Colorado aquamarine seriously — seriously enough to have developed our own proprietary standard for it.

Colorado Blue Ice™ Aquamarine is our trademarked designation for the finest aquamarine we source and cut — stones that meet our standards for color saturation, clarity, and cut quality. Every Colorado Blue Ice™ stone is hand-faceted by Robert Michael himself, using techniques refined over years of working specifically with Colorado material. The result is a gem that performs in the light the way Colorado aquamarine is capable of performing — not the way a mass-produced stone is programmed to.

Our Colorado aquamarine jewelry is available in a range of settings — rings, pendants, bracelets, and earrings in yellow or white gold — each piece designed to let the stone speak for itself. Whether you're looking for a classic solitaire pendant, a statement ring, or a gift with genuine Colorado roots, our collection offers pieces that carry the kind of story a mass-market jeweler simply can't tell.

A Gemstone With a Sense of Place

There are gemstones that come from anywhere and go to everywhere. And then there are stones that belong to a place — stones that carry the character of the land they came from in a way that can't be replicated or approximated.

Colorado Blue Ice Aquamarine is that kind of stone. Pulled from the peaks of the Rocky Mountains, cut by hand, and set into jewelry meant to be worn and passed down — it's the kind of piece that means something beyond its carat weight and price tag.

If you're looking for Colorado Blue Ice Aquamarine jewelry with documented provenance, hand-cut stones, and the craftsmanship of a maker who has spent years working with this material — we'd love to show you what we have.
