Colorado contains an abundance of mineral resources. According to Mindat.org, 906 distinct minerals have been identified in Colorado, making it one of the most mineralogically diverse States in the U.S.. Over 40 mineral species were first discovered in Colorado, with numerous varieties and sub-species.
The State is known for 30 varieties of minerals commonly used to cut gemstones, both faceted and cabochons, including Diamond, Aquamarine (the State Gemstone), Rhodochrosite (the State Mineral), Amazonite, Topaz and Smoky Quartz.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) maintains a mineral program covering locatable minerals, solid leasable minerals, and mineral materials. Colorado's Locatable Minerals program has over 10,000 active mining claims, 31 authorized mining plans of operations, and 33 authorized exploration notices for gold, silver, uranium, and other minerals. Robert Michael Gems controls 5 of the active mining claims and maintained one authorized mining plan of operation.
It’s seldom mentioned, but the largest faceted diamond sourced in the United States was found at the Kelsey Lake Mine in Colorado in 1997. It was named the Freedom Diamond and weighs 16.86 carats. It was cut from a 28.20 carat rough diamond crystal.
Additionally, there are several locations in Chaffee and Fremont Counties where the rare earth minerals Euxenite, Monazite, Allanite, and Gadolinite are found in association with Fluorite. We’re aware of many others that have been identified at a Colorado amethyst location. Use the links below for research.
Most gem hunting takes place in the high mountains, requiring hiking and proper tools to access known locations. Use caution and be smart! We assembled a list below of 29 gem-related Colorado minerals that we’ve pursued and if we use them in our jewelry. We hope you find it handy.
