The gemstone hardness scale most people are referring to is the Mohs scale, developed in 1812 by German mineralogist Friedrich Mohs. It ranks minerals from 1 (softest) to 10 (hardest) based on one specific property: scratch resistance. A mineral rated 7 can scratch anything rated 6 or below, and can be scratched by anything rated 8 or above. That's it. The scale doesn't measure toughness, brittleness, or resistance to cleavage — just scratch resistance.

The Middle Range (6.5–7.5): Capable with Some Care

Quartz (7) — which includes amethyst, citrine, smoky quartz, and prasiolite — hits the practical minimum for everyday jewelry. A quartz gemstone can be scratched by harder minerals, but it's resistant to the airborne dust that causes most surface abrasion.

Garnet (6.5–7.5) sits in a similar range, with significant variation depending on the variety. Tsavorite and demantoid garnets sit at or above 7; demantoid edges toward 6.5. Tanzanite (6.5) is a stone that often surprises buyers when they learn its Mohs rating. It's stunning — one of the few naturally blue-to-violet stones in the world — but it's softer than most people expect and has pronounced cleavage in one direction.
