Rhodochrosite is softer than most gems, 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale, and careful handling in required. If this piece is dropped on a hard surface, it may damage the gem. Daily wear can increase that risk. We suggest that the gem be cleaned only with mild soap, water, and a soft brush. Sonic cleaners, steam cleaners, and any harsh chemicals should never be used. With proper care, the piece will be a very beautiful heirloom.

No, Rhodochrosite is not a Birthstone.  However, it is the Colorado State Mineral.
